

Torch/Flameworking
In these classes, you will make glass beads and embellishments. We Work with small, table-top mounted torches. Using small rods of glass (about the size of a pencil), you will use the torch to get the tip of your glass molten and then twirl the molten glass around a small steel rod to make your bead. You can add dots, stripes, and textures to make your bead unique.
Beadmaking

Ages 12 to adult
90 Minute Class
$40/person; 3-4 beads per person

In this class you will the basics to make beads of your very own. After an artist demonstration, you will select your colors and basic bead shape. You will then learn to handle a mandrel (thin metal rod) in a flame while applying glass from a colored rod. Each participant typically makes 3-4 beads. After your beads are complete, they are placed in an oven to begin the slow cooling process.

Wine/Bottle Stopper

Ages 12 to adult
90 Minute Class
$65/person; 1 wine/bottle stopper

In this class you will learn the basics to make your very own glass bottle stopper. After an artist demonstration, you will select your colors and basic stopper shape. You will then learn to handle a mandrel (thin metal rod) in a flame while applying glass from a colored rod. After your bottle stopper is complete, it is placed in an oven to begin the slow cooling process.

Pipemaking

Age: Adult (21 years or older)
90 Minute Class
$75/Person, 2 pipes

In this class, you will learn the basics to make a borosilicate one-hitter pipe. After an artist demonstration, you will choose colors and you'll learn how to handle the material (a thin borosilicate tube) in a flame while applying glass from a color rod. After your pipes are complete, they will be placed in an oven for the slow cooling process. Each participant will make TWO (2) pipes. You must be 21 years or older to participate in this class. ID's will be checked before the class starts.

Intro to Flameworking -
Torching with Soft Glass

Age: 12 to Adult
Duration: 3 hours per evening x 4 evenings (12 hours total)
Meets on Tuesday evenings 6:00-9:00 pm,

We teach you to take rods of glass (about the size of a long pencil) and turn them into beads using table-top mounted torches. You will use the fame to get the tip of your glass molten and then twirl the hot glass around a small steel rod to create your own beads.
In this 12 hour course, students will work in a small group, each at a torch, as an artist teaches the techniques involved in making flame-worked beads. Topics including creating basic shapes, tooling, dot application, and stringers. Students will also learn about preparing a mandrel and annealing beads. A great way to create glass art without the heat of the furnace!

Intro to Flameworking -
Torching with Borosilicate Glass

Age: 12 to Adult
Duration: 3 hours per evening x 5 evenings (15 hours total)

Ready to take your flameworking to a new level? In this class, you will learn how to use borosilicate glass on a Red Max torch to begin making larger and more advanced glass sculptures. You will learn the basics of blown glass tubing and color application.

After completing this class, students are eligible to rent Columbus Glass Art Center torches with instructor approval and continue to make glass work on their own. Previous completion of Torch 1: Soft Glass is not required. Please review our Cancellation Policy.
